The full estimate

Estimate the full cost, not just the price on the box.

“Free” filing often stops being free once you add a state return, freelance income or crypto. We estimate the total for your situation.

  • Federal and every state. Each state return priced separately, including the ones that don’t need one.
  • Required add-ons included. Crypto imports and upgrades your forms force you into.
  • Only verified discounts. Promotions count only while they’re active.

No surprises

Know exactly why a plan fits, or doesn’t.

Every plan is checked against the forms your return needs. When one can’t handle it, we say which form and why, instead of letting you find out halfway through filing.

  • Form-by-form matching. Schedule C, Form 8949, Schedule E, multi-state and more.
  • Unknown means unknown. Anything we can’t confirm is flagged, never assumed.
  • Every price is dated. You see when we last checked it against the provider’s site.

How it works

Your estimate in three steps

  1. 1

    Answer a few questions

Filing status, income types, investments and your state. No documents or Social Security number.

  2. 2

    We check every plan

Each plan is matched against the forms you need, and we estimate the cost of your federal and state returns.

  3. 3

    File for less

Fine-tune the estimate in the cost calculator, then continue to the provider’s site to file.

Start my comparison

Honest comparisons. Private by design.

We make money only when you choose to sign up through a link, and that never changes which plan comes first.

Ranked by price

The lowest total that fits your return comes first. Referral fees are never part of the ranking.

Nothing sensitive

No name, SSN, tax documents, bank details or exact income. Just a few anonymous answers.

Checked often

During filing season, prices are re-checked at least weekly, and each one shows its date.

Not a tax preparer

We compare software. You file directly with the provider you choose.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is Taxamoney free?

Yes. Some providers may pay us a referral fee when you sign up through our link. That never changes the order of results.

How accurate are the estimates?

Each price comes from the provider's published pricing, with the date we checked it. Your final price is set by the provider and can change with forms or options you add, so confirm it before you pay.

What if my taxes are complicated?

If you have something we haven't verified, like K-1 or foreign income, we tell you instead of recommending a plan that might not handle it.

Which states do you cover?

All 50 states and DC. We also know which states have no income tax return, so you aren't charged for one.

Do you file my taxes?

No. We compare filing services. When you choose one, you file on that provider's own website.

Why do you ask for an income range?

Some free tiers have income limits. A range is enough to check them, so we never ask for your exact income.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Your answers stay in your browser session. There's nothing to sign up for.

How do you make money?

Some providers may pay a referral fee when you sign up through a link. Each result says whether that applies.
